The tagline for ASICS' Kinsei 3 running shoe is Pure Running Science: it is, at once, the most advanced, detailed and compact shoe in their running line. Working in collaboration with Vitro Robertson and Palma VFX, we produced a website that personified these very qualities, enabling viewers to rotate a 3D model of the shoe and view its innovative technologies.
The process started with the creation of a 3D shoe model (requiring a scan of the original shoe prototype), followed by separation of the shoe into its nine innovative technologies (such as the Guidance Line, Heel Clutching System and GEL Cushioning System). The resulting models were textured, shaded and lit before they were rotated in identical fashions, allowing viewers to toggle between technologies at any point during the shoe rotation.
In order to optimize website performance, a sequence of 100+ PNG images were created for the shoe and each innovative technology (if you're counting at home/office, that's over 1,000 image renders). Additionally, an XML-based solution was setup to allow content localization for 27 different countries (and counting); regional offices could add their content into a text file and the Flash will format accordingly, no matter what language or character set.
