SAPPINGTON :: SUMMER
DEG003 | August 2002 | limited edition european 10" vinyl and compact disc

Sometimes it's the subtle, nearly invisible elements that produce the greatest beauty. Sappington's summer builds on this theory with carefully structured melodies wrapped in layers of electronics. In one breath, warm, sullen vocals brush over a sparse foundation of sonic pulses and simple strums; in another, static buzz meshes mechanics with dissonance and drum loops. Opening like a slow, sleepy Sunday ("Airtight - Morning Version"), summer surges into gritty guitars (a cover of Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine") and noisy analog ("Libra") before concluding with fuzzy electronic beats ("Airtight - Remix") provided by Park Avenue Music's Wes Steed.

"Sappington pulls from a number of different sound sources to create an idiosyncratic, somnolent style that walks the line between shoegazing dream pop and ambient electronic music. The feeling in these restrained, smartly orchestrated pieces goes beyond slow, soaring melancholy; there's an added tension, a nebulous paranoia about the unknown and unexpected. [ With ] SUMMER, the duo continues to juxtapose their soft searching voices with melodic acoustics and slightly dissonant electronics."
Epitonic

"Ann's voice gently, warmly, and almost sadly, croons over the distorted sound fragments and sparse instrumentation that characterized their debut... SUMMER finds Sappington in the midst of a metropolis underworld, surrounded by metal and concrete, tinkering with computers and machines on a sweltering, humid night."
